Die sog. Goldgläser, welche in der vorliegenden Arbeit zum ersten Male einer eingehenderen, zusammenfassenden Bearbeitung unterzogen werden, stehen allen anderen Fundgegenständen der römischen Katakomben, welche die günstigsten Vorbedingungen für die Erhaltung solcher zerbrechlichen Ware boten und deshalb die reichste Ausbeute geliefert haben, an Wert voran. Diese unscheinbaren Glasscheiben oder -scherben, die im Kunsthandel, wenn er ihrer habhaft werden kann, enorme Preise erzielen, sind wertvolle Denkmäler der Kultur und Kunst jener Zeit, da an Stelle der Schritt für Schritt von der Weltbühne verschwindenden heidnischen eine christliche Gesellschaft emporwuchs. Als die Produkte einer mehr handwerklichen Kunstübung, die für den täglichen Gebrauch arbeitete, gewähren sie einen unmittelbaren Einblick in die Gedanken und Anschauungen, von denen die Künstler inspiriert wurden, zeigen, welches Mass künstlerischer Durchbildung Gemeingut geworden war, verraten in dem Bildervorrat, welcher das tägliche Leben schmücken und erheitern, belehren und erheben sollte, das geistige Niveau des Publikums, für das die Künstlerhand schuf. Was versteht man unter Goldgläsern? Wir behandeln zunächst die Technik und deren Geschichte. Die Goldgläser stellen eine eigentümliche Verbindung von Glas- und Metalltechnik dar: Wir sehen zwischen zwei flachen oder leicht gewölbten, runden Glasscheiben sehr verschiedener Grösse ein Goldblatt eingelegt und auf diesem mit der Radiernadel eine Zeichnung in der Weise ausgeführt, dass die überschüssigen Teile des Goldblattes weggeschabt sind. Da in der Regel für beide Gläser eine durchsichtige, oft leicht grün gefärbte Glasmasse verwendet worden ist, so kann die Zeichnung von zwei Seiten betrachtet werden, wobei sie natürlich einmal im Gegensinne erscheint.
