Die wichtige Frage, welche der vielfältigen Alternativen des Internet-Zugangs die einzelnen Unternehmen (vom Ein-Mann-Unternehmen bis zum Konzern) zur individuell optimalen Zielerreichung auswählen sollen, ist hingegen nicht nur mit Schlagworten zu beantworten. Das Thema "Alternativen des Internet-Zugangs" ist im Kontext mit der Überschrift des Themenblocks 3: "Grundfragen des Electronic Business aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht" zu sehen. Das bedeutet, dass im Folgenden versucht wird, darzulegen, welche Alternativen sich einem Unternehmen1, das sich für den "Eintritt" in das Internet entschieden hat, bieten, um dies ökonomisch sinnvoll zu verwirklichen. Das Internet (Interconnected Networks) verbindet weltweit Netzwerke einzelner Rechner über Hauptleitungen ("Backbones"). Durch diese Verbindung wird es ermöglicht, Datenpakete auf revolutionär schnelle Art und Weise zu transportieren. Die Frage um die es hier nun gehen soll, ist, welche Möglichkeiten es für das Unternehmen X gibt, von seiner Niederlassung aus seinerseits eine Verbindung zu den "Interconnected Networks" herzustellen. Wir unterscheiden grundsätzlich drei Alternativen, einen Zugang zum Internet herzustellen: Der Zugang über -einen Online-Dienst, -einen Provider (ISP/ASP) oder -einen direkten Zugang - ohne Zwischenschaltung eines "Dritten" Electronic Business ist nicht gleich Electronic Business.
