About the Book

Theodor (Binyamin Ze’ev) Herzl war ein osterreichischer Schriftsteller, Journalist und zionistischer Politiker. In Budapest geboren, orientierte sich Herzls Erziehung durch seine Mutter Jeanette Herzl an deutscher Kultur und Sprache, wie es fur die meisten Judinnen und Juden im deutschen Sprachraum selbstverstandlich war. Ab 1878 studierte er in Wien Jura und war fur mehrere Jahre Mitglied der Studentenverbindung Albia, die er aber wegen antisemitischer Außerungen anderer Verbindungsstudenten noch vor seiner Promotion im Jahre 1884 wieder verließ. 1889 heiratete er Julie Naschauer. Von 1891 bis 1894 war Herzl Korrespondent der Wiener Neuen Freien Presse in Paris und berichtete von dort uber die Dreyfus-Affare. Unter dem Eindruck dieser Affare und antisemitischer Ausschreitungen in Frankreich veroffentlichte er 1896 sein Werk Der Judenstaat, in dem er die These entwickelt, dass die Grundung eines eigenen judischen Staates notwendig und durchfuhrbar sei. 1897 organisierte er mit Oskar Marmorek und Max Nordau den 1. Zionistischen Weltkongress in Basel und wurde zum Prasiden-ten der Zionistischen Weltorganisation gewahlt. Das dort verab-schiedete Basler Programm bildete die Grundlage fur zahlreiche Verhandlungen (u. a. mit Kaiser Wilhelm II. und dem turkischen Sultan Abd ul-Hamid II.) mit dem Ziel, eine »Heimstatte des judischen Volkes« in Palastina zu schaffen. Ebenfalls im Jahre 1897 veroffentlichte Herzl das Theaterstuck Das neue Ghetto und grundete in Wien Die Welt als monatlich erscheinende Informationsschrift der zionistischen Bewegung. 1899 grundete Herzl den ›Jewish Colonial Trust‹, dessen Aufgabe der Ankauf von Land in Palastina war, damals noch Teil des Osmanischen Reiches. In seinem utopischen Roman Altneuland entwarf Herzl sein idealistisches Bild eines kunftigen judischen Staates in Palastina. Er formulierte darin einen Entwurf fur seine politische und gesellschaftliche Ordnung eines judischen Staates und vertrat auch die Auffassung, die in Palastina lebenden Araber wurden die neuen judischen Siedler freudig begrußen. Die Benennung der Stadt Tel Aviv (Fruhlingshugel) wurde von Herzls Roman inspiriert. Mit der auf 40 Bande ausgelegten Reihe WIEDERENTDECKTE SCHATZE DER DEUTSCHSPRACHIGEN SCIENCE FICTION werden Klassiker der SF aus der Kaiserzeit und Weimarer Republik wieder greifbar – fur Leser:innen, Bibliotheken und Wissenschaftler:innen. Darunter finden sich Werke von Bernhard Kellermann, Albert Daiber, Julius von Voss und Paul Scheerbart. Aufbereitet werden die oft nur schwer zuganglichen Werke mit Vor- und Nachworten von namhaften Autor:innen. Besonders ist auch die Ausstattung als Hardcover mit Lesebandchen und in zweifarbigem Druck. “Altneuland” ist der funfte Band, der in der Reihe erscheint.
