About the Book

Amadis de Gaula is one of the most famous books of Chivalry called masterpiece of fantasy literature in Castilian and made furor throughout the sixteenth century in Spain. In the late XV century Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo prepeared his final vesion, whose oldest edition known is that of Zaragoza 1508, with the name of the four books of Amadis de Gaula, but it is a much earlier work, that already existed in three books from the fourteenth century, as stated in works of chancelor Pero Lopez de Ayala and Pero Ferrus. Montalvo confesses to have amended the first three books and the author of the fourth. Everything indicates that the original version of Amadiswas Portuguese. It has been attributed to various authors: La Cronica portuguesa de Gomes Eanes de Azurara, written in 1454, mentions as the author Vasco de Lobeira who was knighted in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385). Other sources say that the author was a certain Joao de Lobeira and not the troubadour Vasco de Lobeira.
