About the Book

El amante liberal es uno de los relatos de las Novelas ejemplares de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Narra una historia de amor entre Ricardo y Leonisa, dos jóvenes naturales de Trápana. Ricardo se enamora de Leonisa, y ella lo desdeña, siguiendo lo dispuesto por su familia, que quiere casarla con Cornelio.

Ricardo y Leonisa son víctimas de una razia de corsarios turcos, aunque van en distintas embarcaciones. La de Leonisa naufraga y Ricardo la da por muerta. Sin embargo, la joven sobrevive y es comprada por un mercader judío, que la lleva a Nicosia para venderla en esa ciudad.

De Leonisa se enamoran primero el propio mercader; luego, dos gobernadores de Nicosia, y también un cadí. Los gobernadores, Alí Bajá y Hazán Bajá, pagan la suma que el mercader judío pide por Leonisa y se luego enfrentan entre sí. Para aplacar sus ánimos el cadí decide enviar a Leonisa a Constantinopla, como regalo para el Gran Turco. Mientras, ella queda en su casa.

Mahamut, un italiano amigo de Ricardo, convertido al Islam, hace que su amo el cadí compre también a Ricardo y lo lleve a su casa. Así se reencuentran Leonisa y Ricardo.

El cadí decide emprender el viaje a Constantinopla con la intención secreta de quedarse con Leonisa; le mentirá al Gran Turco diciendo que ella ha muerto durante el viaje.

Al final de El amante liberal, los gobernadores salen en sus galeotas a buscar al cadí, al que atacan. Aprovechando el combate, Ricardo, Mahamut y otros cristianos logran recobrar la libertad y marchan a Trápana. Allí, Leonisa, le declara su amor a Ricardo.

El mismísimo Cervantes fue presa por piratas berberiscos y durante cinco años sufrió un duro cautiverio en Argel. Arriesgó su vida en varios intentos de evasión hasta que fue rescatado por unos frailes trinitarios, mientras iba a Constantinopla a los treinta y tres años.
