Génie précoce des mathématiques et de la physique, André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) est le fondateur de l'électrodynamique, discipline qui unifia l'étude des phénomènes électriques et magnétiques. Ses découvertes capitales sur les interactions entre courants électriques et champs magnétiques jetèrent les bases de l'électromagnétisme moderne. Dès 1820, fasciné par l'expérience d'Orsted montrant l'action d'un courant sur une aiguille aimantée, Ampère se lance dans une quête frénétique pour en percer les mystères. Multipliant les expériences avec une intuition fulgurante, il découvre que deux fils parcourus par des courants s'attirent ou se repoussent selon le sens de circulation. Il imagine alors audacieusement l'existence de courants électriques microscopiques dans les aimants, pour expliquer le magnétisme. Mathématicien hors pair, Ampère modélise ces interactions par la fameuse loi qui porte son nom. Avec une vision unificatrice, il fait du magnétisme un cas particulier des forces entre courants. Précurseur de la théorie électronique de la matière, il introduit le concept visionnaire de "molécule électrodynamique", ancêtre de l'électron. Son oeuvre maîtresse de 1827, "Mémoire sur la théorie mathématique des phénomènes électrodynamiques uniquement déduite de l'expérience", devient la bible de la nouvelle science de l'électrodynamique qu'il a créée de toutes pièces. Ampère y expose son approche théorique d'une rigueur et d'une cohérence admirables, confirmée expérimentalement avec une précision remarquable. Inventeur prolifique, on lui doit aussi le premier télégraphe électrique, l'électroaimant (avec Arago) ou le galvanomètre. Professeur charismatique à Polytechnique et au Collège de France, il forme toute une génération de physiciens.
