Johannes Sapidus' "Anabion" erweist sich als in vieler Beziehung einzigartig. In der Renaissance, als alle Autoren sich genau an das Vorbild der Antike zu halten suchten, erklart Sapidus offen: Wir leben in einer anderen Zeit, also sollten wir auch anders schreiben. In der Reformationszeit, als Autoren ihre Werke einzig zu moralischem Nutzen geschrieben haben wollten, gesteht Sapidus, er habe seinen "Anabion" nur fur die Unterhaltung der Spieler und der Zuschauer verfasst. Doch bewegt er sich mit uberlegener Selbstverstandlichkeit in reinem klassischen Latein, weiss er die quantitativen Versmasse der Antike mit absoluter Sicherheit der jeweiligen Stimmung seines Werkes einzugliedern. Dabei versteht es Sapidus, seine Figuren mit einer Genauigkeit des Charakters, einer Fulle der Einzelzuge auszustatten, wie vor Shakespeare niemand sonst. Hier ist christlicher Stoff in antikem Gewande. Anabion kann es wohl aufnehmen mit den Dramen des Plautus, des Terenz.
Johannes Sapidus (eigentlich Witz) wurde 1490 in Schlettstadt, im Elsass als Sohn eines wohlhabenden Handwerkers geboren. Er erhielt seine Schulung in der beruhmten Lateinschule seiner Heimatstadt, an der Universitat Paris. Als Rector der Lateinschule in Schlettstadt brachte er diese Schule zu besonderer Blute im humanistischen Geiste. 1526 als Protestant aus Schlettstadt ausgewiesen, wurde er Rector einer Lateinschule in Strassburg, dann Professor fur Poetik an der neuen Akademie in Strassburg. Er starb in Strassburg 1561. Unter seinen zahlreichen Werken ist der "Anabion" das bedeutendste.
Der Anabion sollte fur die Germanisten wie fur die klassischen Philologen von grossem Interesse sein wegen seiner einzigartigen dramatischen Wirksamkeit, seiner uberlegenen Beherrschung der antiken Sprache, der antiken Form. Die lebendige Charakterisierung, die wuchtige Struktur sollten auch Intendanten, Regisseure ermutigen, "Anabion" auf die moderne Buhne zu bringen. Schliesslich und endlich bietet das Werk eine interessante Lekture fur den gewohnlichen Leser."
