Ukrainalaissyntyinen runoilija Anna Ahmatova kuului runoilijoiden suureen kvartettiin, jossa hanen lisakseen olivat Marina Tsvetajeva, Osip Mandelshtam ja Boris Pasternak. Heidan runoutensa on hallinnut Venajan kirjallisuutta vallankumouksen jalkeen yli sadan vuoden ajan.Anna Andrejevna Gorenko syntyi kesakuun 11. (23.) paivana 1889 Mustanmeren rannalla, Bolshoi Fontanissa, lahella Odessaa ja kuoli Domodedovossa, lahella Moskovaa 5. maaliskuuta 1966. Hanen viimeinen leposijansa on Komarovossa (Terijoen Kellomaella), missa sijaitsi Leningradin alueen Kirjailijaliiton hanen kayttoonsa vuonna 1955 myontama datsha, Ahmatovan koti kaikkien kodittomien vuosikymmenien jalkeen.Anna Gorenkon isa oli ukrainalainen, isanaiti kreikkalainen, aiti venalainen ja isomummo tataariruhtinatar. Hanen elamaansa savyttivat pakanallinen lapsuus Krimilla, kouluvuodet Kiovassa, lainopinnot Kiovan yliopistossa, boheemi nuoruus Pietarin avantgarde-taiteilijoiden piireissa, lapimurto runoilijana 1910-luvulla tataari-nimella Ahmatova.
