Anna Schlatter-Bernet war eine der bedeutenden Schweizer Frauen des fruhen 19. Jahrhunderts und gehort zu den wichtigen Personlichkeiten des schweizerischen Pietismus. Ihre Ausstrahlung reichte weit uber die Landesgrenzen hinaus. Marianne Jehle schildert nicht nur die Lebensumstande dieser bemerkenswerten Frau, sondern auch deren menschliche und religiose Entwicklung, die sie immer starker zu einem bibelorientierten, weltoffenen Christusglauben fuhrte. Wie ihr Ehemann Hector Schlatter stammte sie aus der stadtischen Oberschicht St. Gallens. In ihrer Ehe, der dreizehn Kinder entsprangen, fand sie trotz der Aufgabe als Mutter und als Geschaftsfrau an der Seite ihres Mannes einen bemerkenswerten Freiraum zur Pflege vielfaltiger Freundschaften und Briefkontakte. Anna Schlatter studierte fur sich selbst zeitgenossische theologische Literatur und entwickelte sich zu einer eigenstandigen Theologin und Seelsorgerin. Ihre Korrespondenz war international und okumenisch orientiert. So pflegte sie etwa Freundschaften mit dem Zurcher Pfarrer und Freund Goethes Johann Caspar Lavater und dessen Tochter, mit dem katholischen Bischof Johann Michael Sailer von Regensburg und vielen anderen Personlichkeiten der evangelischen und katholischen Erweckungsbewegung.
