About the Book

"You're the Captain Now" are the words that 12 year-old Annabelle Pepper never expected her mother to tell her moments before Annabelle's escape pod sinks below the Afterwise Sea. Anabelle's whole life on the ship she's called home along with everyone she's ever loved is now gone and she is adrift and alone in the unforgiving Afterwise Sea. Struggling through grief and malicious storms, Annabelle knows she must keep on and find something that can prove there is life somewhere, even though land disappeared 200 years ago. Otherwise, her loss will be too much to bear.

After a chance encounter with a boy named Maxwell Malone, also alone on the unforgiving Afterwise Sea, Annabelle is relieved to not only feel like there might be other humans out there, but also shocked at the appearance of an actual real life bird. Life MUST be out there and to honor all her family she has lost, she and Max decide to chug through the sea together, conducting experiments along the way to prove that this lifeless sea might hold more than it appears.

But unbeknownst to Annabelle and Maxwell, monstrous and legendary things from 200 years ago are waking up and wreaking havoc. Aquabots with only one job: exterminate anything alive on sight. And with the appearance of a ghostly women on a sea bed of kelp, Annabelle and Max know they're approaching something big, something alive. But the Aquabots are merciless and find Annabelle and Max and separate them, leaving Annabelle back in her escape pod with a new captain's mission: find Maxwell, find the lady of the Kelp and maybe even land.
