Zwei Zeitzeuginnen melden sich zu Wort: Das Kriegskind Margot Skorupa und das Nachkriegskind Dr. Ingrid Stockmann. Sie sind Mutter und Tochter. Margots Eltern waren Widerstandskämpfer gegen das Hitlerregime, die Mutter als Zivilistin und der Vater als Parteikader. Obwohl in der ehemaligen DDR im Gegensatz zur BRD der "linke Widerstand" sehr angesehen war und ihre Eltern durch Erschießen getötet wurden, also für den Frieden ihr Leben ließen, zeigten die Parteigenossen kein Interesse an ihrer Würdigung. Margot war eines der sechs Kriegsvollwaisen, welche kurz vor Kriegsende ihres Vaters und ihrer Mutter beraubt wurden. Das jüngste Geschwister war erst sieben und Margot 16 Jahre alt. Die Autorin beschreibt ihre Kindheit bis zum Abschluss der Volksschule und spannt dann einen Bogen zu ihrem weiteren Leben. Sie leistete u. a. seelischen Widerstand gegen die subtile Unterdrückung in der DDR als angebliche Dissidentin. Dabei wollte sie lediglich aus dem Grund nicht politisch sein, weil Politik nur Unglück über ihre Familie gebracht hatte. Der verfassungsrechtlich verankerten "Pflicht zur Arbeit" kam sie nicht nach, weil sie die Pflege ihrer seit dem vierten Lebensjahr psychisch behinderten ersten Tochter selbst übernehmen wollte. Sie wurde verdächtigt, sich durch die zahlreiche Westverwandtschaft, worunter auch DDR-Flüchtlinge waren, politisch negativ beeinflussen zu lassen. Die Überwachung betraf ihre gesamte, selbst gegründete Familie und insbesondere ihre Tochter Ingrid, welche ihrer Mutter am Sterbebett die Zuversicht gab, ihr Manuskript herauszubringen und ihre Eltern zu würdigen. Dr. Ingrid Stockmann ergänzt die Ausführungen durch eigene Erinnerungen sowie Erfahrungen und führt diese weiter. Sie beschreibt das Familienschicksal in dem dazugehörigen zeitgeschichtlichen Rahmen und lässt auch einige analytische Kenntnisse mit einfließen.
