About the Book

This is Brian Brown's personal diary of his rise from Belisha Boy signalman up to the giddy heights of 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals between 1939 until 1945. Brian had a varied career in the Army including 31/2 years as a Prisoner of War after being ordered by CIC Percival to surrender to the Japanese at the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942. The Diary takes Brian from Singapore to PamPong to work on building the new spur of railway which extended to Rangoon to join up with the existing railway. On the journey, in spite of the deprivation of hunger, illness & fatigue which accumulated from being held prisoner in appalling conditions, Brian worked with Indian elephants, herded cattle and ate any stray pigs which crossed his path - these experiences contributed to his decision to become a farmer later in life.
About the Author: Author Brian Brown was born in Kuala Lumpur, an only child, on 29th October 1918 and lived there until the age of four years when he was shipped home via Vancouver, Canada to arrive in Bridge of Weir in Scotland aged five years. Brian moved to Glasgow with his Governess and was sent to Cargofield Prep School. This was not a happy experience for the six year old, but attended Fettes College in Edinburgh, where his father had been a pupil, at the age of thirteen years. The four years at Fettes proved to be one of the happiest times of his life. Unfortunately his father passed away in 1936 and rather than the academic future envisioned for him, Brian went to work in the family business in Glasgow - William Forbes & Co, Coal Merchants until signing up as a Belisha Boy in 1939, serving in the British Army until discharged in 1945. After the war, Brian bought the family business from his uncle, but his heart was always in farming and the family finally moved to Lochfield Farm, Darvel until Brian retired in 1986.
