Das Buch beschreibt die Strategien der Firmen Tungsram sowie Ganz & Co., der beiden Leitunternehmen der ungarischen elektrotechnischen Industrie, mit denen sie Wachstumshindernisse ihres spat industrialisierenden und absatzschwachen Heimatmarkts zu uberwinden und die globale privatwirtschaftliche Regulierung der Elektroindustrie mitzugestalten versuchten. Im Fokus steht der Lern- und Adaptionsprozess der beiden Unternehmen bei ihren Bemuhungen, sich in die Wissensgenerierungs- und Verteilungsnetzwerke der Weltmarktfuhrer zu integrieren, die Entwicklungsrichtung der Technologie mitzubestimmen und technische Standards, Aussenhandels- und Kartellbestimmungen sowie staatliche Industrieforderung mit koordinierter Lobbyarbeit national und international zu beeinflussen.Die Perspektive mittlerer Unternehmen des Leitsektors der zweiten industriellen Revolution bietet neue Erkenntnisse uber die Globalisierung vom spaten 19. bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts, d.h. bis zur staatssozialistischen Festlegung der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Ordnung in Osteuropa fur die anschliessenden vier Jahrzehnte. Denn ostmitteleuropaische Grossunternehmen standen bislang selten im Fokus von Globalisierungsstudien. Da Ungarn im Untersuchungszeitraum zu einander ablosenden, verschiedenen hegemonialen Strukturen gehorte, in denen es uber unterschiedliche Grade an politischer und wirtschaftlicher Souveranitat verfugte, beleuchtet die hier gewahlte Mikroperspektive zum einen die veranderlichen nationalen und intraregionalen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Hindernisse vor dem Aufholen gegenuber Westeuropa, zum anderen die Reaktion der ungarischen Wirtschaftselite auf die Globalisierung. Daruber hinaus verdeutlicht die Untersuchung, wie sich das Netzwerk von Beteiligungs-, Lizenz- und Kartellvertragen der Weltmarktfuhrer und die Mechanismen regionaler und globaler Marktordnungen wie auch die eigenen Spielraume aus der Sicht mittelgrosser Unternehmen gestalteten.
