About the Book

En 1823 Félix Varela proclamó el derecho de Cuba a ser una nación independiente y soberana. El presente volumen recoge artículos publicados por Varela en El Habanero. Como se verá aquí se compilan desde textos políticos y de actualidad sobre la situación internacional de su época, hasta crónicas sobre los avances científicos y económicos. Asimismo aquí aparecen algunas de las críticas de que fue objeto el padre Varela por su posición a favor de la independencia de Cuba. Destacan además, por sorprendentes desde una mirada actual, sus observaciones sobre una inminente invasión de México y Colombia a la isla de Cuba.
About the Author: Felix Varela y Morales (teologo, sacerdote, investigador cubano). Hijo de un militar espanol. A los seis anos vivio con su familia en La Florida, bajo dominio espanola. Alli curso la primera ensenanza. En 1801 regreso a La Habana, donde, al ano siguiente, entro en el Seminario de San Carlos y San Ambrosio. En 1806 obtuvo el titulo de Bachiller en Teologia y tomo los habitos. Recibio el subdiaconato en 1809 y el diaconato en 1810. Ese mismo ano se graduo de Licenciado en Teologia. En 1811 hizo oposicion a la catedra de Latinidad y Retorica y a la de Filosofia en el Seminario de San Carlos. Obtuvo esta tras renidos y brillantes ejercicios y pudo desempenarla gracias a una dispensa de edad. Tambien en 1811 se ordeno de sacerdote. A partir de entonces y hasta 1816 desplego una intensa labor como orador. En 1817 fue admitido como socio de numero en la Real Sociedad Economica, que mas tarde le confirio el titulo de Socio de Merito. Por estos anos aparecieron sus discursos en Diario del Gobierno, El Observador Habanero y Memorias de la Real Sociedad Economica de La Habana. Cuando en 1820, a raiz del establecimiento en Espana de la constitucion de 1812, fue agregada la catedra de Constitucion al Seminario de San Carlos, la obtuvo por oposicion mas solo pudo desempenarla durante tres meses en 1821, porque fue elegido diputado a las Cortes de 1822. El 22 de diciembre del mismo ano presento en estas, con otras personalidades, una proposicion pidiendo un gobierno economico y politico para las provincias de ultramar. Tambien presento un proyecto pidiendo el reconocimiento de la independencia de Hispanoamerica y escribio una Memoria que demuestra la necesidad de extinguir la esclavitud de los negros en la Isla de Cuba, atendiendo a los intereses de sus propietarios, que no llego a presentar a las Cortes. Voto por la regencia en 1823, por lo que, al ser reimplantado el absolutismo por el rey Fernando VII, tuvo que refugiarse en Gibraltar. Poco despues fue condenado a muerte. El 17 de diciembre de ese ano llego a Estados Unidos. Vivio en Filadelfia y despues en Nueva York, donde publico el periodico independentista El Habanero. Redacto, junto a Jose Antonio Saco, El Mensajero Semanal. En 1837 fue nombrado vicario general de Nueva York. En 1841 el claustro de Teologia del Seminario de Santa Maria de Baltimore le confirio el grado de Doctor de la Facultad. En union de Charles C. Pise edito la revista mensual The catholic expositor and literary magazine (1841-1843). Publico con seudonimo la primera edicion de las Poesias (Nueva York, 1829) de Manuel de Zequeira. Murio en los Estados Unidos.
