Je rappellerai les exploits de ces heros d'autrefois qui, par la bouche du Pont et a travers les roches Kyanees, sur l'ordre du roi Pelias, menerent vers la toison la solide nef Argo, tels sont les premiers vers des Argonautiques d'Apollonios, sans doute l'auteur epique le plus celebre apres Homere. Le poeme d'Apollonios relate le fameuse histoire de Jason, cestui-la qui conquit la toison, grace a Medee, la sorciere de Thrace, et a Athena, la deesse qui le protege depuis la proue de l'Argo. Si le mythe est connu, la vie du poete nous est plus obscure. D'Apollonios nous savons qu'il naquit, non pas a Rhodes, mais a Alexandrie, en 295 avant J.C., qu'il fut le recepteur de Ptolemee III Evergete, et sans doute qu'il devint le directeur de la bibliotheque d'Alexandrie. Il dut s'exiler a Rhodes, mais les raisons de cet exil ne nous sont pas connues. Ce grand erudit ne se cantonna pas a la poesie epique et ecrivit des oeuvres philologiques dont un Contre Zenodote et un commentaire d'Hesiode, ainsi que des recits etiologiques. Mais sa plus grande oeuvre est sans nul doute Les Argonautiques, long poeme epique reussissant a meler a la tradition homerique l'erudition qui charmait le public de la periode alexandrine. Notre edition rassemble en trois volumes les quatre chants des Argonautiques. L'introduction generale du tome I presente en detail la vie et l'oeuvre d'Apollonios, et fait notamment le point sur son eventuelle querelle avec un autre bibliothecaire celebre, Callimaque. Les sources du poeme, comme par exemple les poemes hesiodiques et les mysterieux Naupactiques, sont analysees, de meme que la tradition manuscrite. Chaque chant est en outre precede d'une notice qui lui est propre. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont developpees, en fin d'ouvrage, par des notes complementaires et des notes additionnelles. Les tomes I et II sont assortis de cartes, tandis que le tome II contient un complement d'introduction. Le tome III est en outre enrichi d'un Index nominum et d'un Index vocabulorum, et de notabilia varia. Tome I: texte etabli et commente par Francis Vian, et traduit par E.
