About the Book

Les quelques documents que nous possedons sur Apsines nous permettent d'etablir que notre auteur serait Valerius Apsines de Gadara, un Phenicien qui aurait vecu entre 190 et 250 apres J.C. Professeur de rhetorique, il aurait aussi effectue une charge consulaire. De lui nous avons conserve un Art Rhetorique et un manuel traitant des Problemes a faux semblants. Il aurait publie des declamations, dont probablement un Hermon, un Lysandre et peut-etre un Aristogiton. Il connut une grande popularite dans les ecoles car ses oeuvres, a la fois claires, precises et methodiques, etaient d'une utilisation particulierement pratique. En effet, Apsines a eu l'originalite d'organiser son traite suivant les parties du discours: l'etudiant orateur pouvait ainsi s'adapter et disposer d'une methode et d'une formulation type a tous les differents moments du discours.

Notre edition rassemble les deux textes qui nous sont parvenus sous le nom d'Apsines. La riche introduction fait le point sur les connaissances relatives a l'auteur ainsi que sur les diverses theories oratoires, dont l'Antiquite fut si feconde. Tous les termes techniques, aux definitions parfois subtiles et complexes, sont clairement expliques. Un plan detaille de chacun des traites est mis a la disposition, lui permettant de circuler aisement dans le texte. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont developpees, en fin de volume par des notes complementaires. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi d'un Index nominum, d'un Index verborum, d'un Index des noms propres ainsi que d'une table des lieux cites.
