Die meisten arabisch-stämmigen Immigranten, oder Nachkommen von Immigranten, fühlen sich heute als Indonesier und fast alle erwarben nach der Unabhängigkeit die indonesische Staatsbürgerschaft (de Jonge 1993, 73). Dabei blieben erkennbare kulturelle Unterschiede zwischen den arabischen und den indigenen Indonesiern erhalten, sowie sich die Identität der Hadramis in dieser Region auch von der anderer Araber in der Welt unterscheidet. (...) Einführend soll zunächst die Ankunft und Gründe der Niederlassung der Araber in Indonesien, der damaligen Kolonie "Niederländisch-Ostindien", erläutert werden.(...) Im Anschluss soll die erfahrene Diskriminierung unter der holländischen Kolonialregierung und den Widerstand der Hadramis gegen diese behandelt werden, da dieser Aspekt relevante Einflüsse auf die Bildung einer kollektiven Identität hatte. Daraufhin sollen die Verbindung und Identifizierung der Hadramis mit der arabischen Welt zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht werden. Das Gefühl eines "Araberseins" wurde dabei besonders durch die Entstehung arabischer Zeitungen und enge internationale Beziehungen mit anderen islamischen Ländern geprägt. Des Weiteren wird die Entstehung arabischer Organisationen in Indonesien dargelegt, welche zunächst die Gemeinschaft stärkten und einen großen Fortschritt im Bildungswesen der Araber mit sich brachte. In diesem Kontext spielen ein starker Wandel traditioneller Hierarchien und eine konfliktreiche Spaltung der Gesellschaft der Hadramis eine Rolle.
