Der im Pariser Exil lebende irakische Dichter und Publizist Abd al-Qadir al-Dschanibi ist bislang in der westlichen islamwissenschaftlichen und arabistischen Forschung, in Literatur und Offentlichkeit weitgehend unbekannt. Diese Untersuchung vermittelt erstmals ein Bild des Autors und seines bisherigen Werkes unter den Aspekten Inhalt, Ausdruck und Rezeption. Der selbsternannte "Erbe" surrealistischer Pioniere in der arabischen Welt prasentiert sich in seiner umfangreichen publizistischen Aktivitat, die in ihrer kuhnen Radikalitat aus der zeitgenossischen arabischen Literaturlandschaft hervorsticht, als ikonoklastischer Agitator gegen die arabisch-islamische Kultur und Gesellschaft. Sein poetisches Werk weist al-Dschanibi als bemerkenswerten Avantgarde-Dichter mit einer differenzierten poetischen Entwicklung aus, der sich neben seiner thematischen Individualitat besonders durch seine eigenwillige poetische Sprache auszeichnet. Ausgangspunkt dieser Studie ist die intellektuelle Entwicklung des Autors, seine synkretistische Rezeption von Ideen und Ideologien der westlichen Kultur, die seiner kompromisslosen Kritik der arabisch-islamischen Gegenwart zugrunde liegt. Darin stellt der Surrealismus ein wesentliches, dauerhaftes Element dar, das al-Dschanibis gesamtes Denken und Werk pragt. Einem Uberblick uber die publizistische Produktion und einer Darstellung seiner Konzeption von Dichtung und Dichter sowie seiner poetischen Entwicklung folgt eine eingehende inhaltliche, formale und stilistische Analyse des reichen poetischen Werkes, das die konventionellen Grenzen zwischen Poesie und Prosa bricht. Die Rezeption von Autor und Werk und die Frage einer literarischen Wirkung runden die Betrachtung ab. Doch al-Dschanibis Bedeutung liegt nicht allein in seinem Werk; ebenso wichtig ist seine Funktion als charismatischer Initiator literarischer und kunstlerischer Projekte. Wie auch immer man Inhalt und Ausdruck seiner Ideen beurteilen mag, die schillernde Figur dieses enfant terrible der modernen arabischen Literaturszene sucht bislang ihresgleichen.
