About the Author:

Professors Janet K. Allen and Farrokh Mistree are a wife and husband partnership whose passion is to have fun in providing highly motivated and talented people an opportunity to learn how to define and achieve their dreams. Anand Balu Nellippallil, the lead author of the book, is one such person. Together with co-authors, Dr. BP Gautham of Tata Consultancy Services, India and Professor A.K. Singh of IIT Kanpur, India, they mentored Anand in the completion of his dissertation on which this book is based.

Janet holds the John and Mary Moore Chair in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Farrokh holds the L. A. Comp Chair at the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Janet received her S.B. degree from MIT in 1967 and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973. She has co-authored one textbook, two monographs and over 300 technical articles associated with managing uncertainty inherent in simulation-based design associated with the integrated realization of materials, products and associated manufacturing processes, the design of mechanical, thermal and structural systems and engineered networks. She is a Fellow of ASME, an honorary member of Pi Tau Sigma and a senior member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of SWE, ASEE, INFORMS and TMS.

Farrokh received his B.Tech. (Hons) degree in Naval Architecture in 1967 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1974. He has co-authored two textbooks, two monographs and more than 400 technical papers dealing with the integrated realization of materials, products and associated manufacturing processes, the design of mechanical, thermal and structural systems; ships and aircraft; engineered networks. Farrokh is a Fellow of ASME and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. He was named the ASME Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Engineering Design Educator in 2011. In September 2012, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. In December 2012, he received the Life Time Achievement Award from the International Society for Agile Manufacturing, Lafayette, Louisiana.

Janet and Farrokh co-direct the Systems Realization Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma. Their research focus is on collaboratively defining the emerging frontier for the "intelligent" decision-based realization of complex (cyber-physical-social) systems when the computational models are incomplete and inaccurate. Their quest for answers is anchored in six research thrusts, namely

  • Co-design of Engineered Materials, Products, and Associated Manufacturing Processes
  • Knowledge-Based Dynamic Management of Multi-stage Complex Processes
  • Knowledge-Based Management Organized and Disorganized Complexity and Risk
  • Knowledge-Based Platform for Decision Support in the Design of Engineered Systems
  • Exploiting the Food-Energy-Water Nexus for Rural Development in India
  • Contextual Assessment of Student Learning through Reflection on Doing

Dr. Anand Balu Nellippallil received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering working with Professors Farrokh Mistree and Janet K. Allen in the Systems Realization Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma (OU) in September 2018. This book is based on Anand's doctoral dissertation. Anand received his M.Tech. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, India in 2014, and his B.Tech. degree in Production Engineering from the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, University of Calicut, India in 2012. Since November 2018, he holds a Research Engineer II position at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) at Mississippi State University. His current research interests are focused on the integrated realization of engineered materials, products and associated manufacturing processes. Anand has received several scholarships and awards, namely the 2018 Provost's Dissertation Prize for outstanding dissertation in science and engineering at OU, the Gallogly College of Engineering Dissertation Excellence Award, the Frank Chuck Mechanical Engineering Scholarships (2016 and 2017), Paper of Distinction at the ASME Design Automation Conference, a silver medal from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bhubaneswar for best academic performance and a university first rank medal from the University of Calicut. Anand has co-authored nearly 20 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. Anand is a member of ASME.

Dr. B. P. Gautham is a principal scientist at TCS Research and heads a research and innovation program on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering and development of TCS PREMAP platform. He obtained his B.Tech. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics from Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, Chennai, India. Gautham has been with TCS Research since 1994. Gautham's primary interests include application of modeling and simulation tools--both physics based and data based--for engineering analysis with emphasis on materials engineering and manufacturing processes. He worked closely with various industries in troubleshooting, enhancing and optimizing manufacturing process with targets on quality, productivity and energy. His current interests extend to utilization of state-of-the-art machine learning and knowledge engineering frameworks for materials and mechanical engineering. Gautham has published over 60 papers in journals and conference proceedings encompassing areas of application of FEA, CFD, Data Sciences, Optimization and Robust Design applied to materials, manufacturing and product engineering. He has been on many international conference organizing committees and also is a reviewer for a number of journals.

Professor Amarendra Kumar Singh received his B.Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Prior to joining IIT Kanpur in April 2015, he was with TCS Innovations Lab-TRDDC, Pune for 23 years where he successfully demonstrated the power and utility of mathematical modelling in the design of manufacturing operations leading to significant productivity gains, quality improvements, energy saving and/or environment compliance and has delivered successful innovative solutions to several industries. Amarendra's current research focus is in the areas of Mathematical Modeling of Metallurgical Operations with special focus on steelmaking, solidification processing and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME). Amarendra is currently the Coordinator of ICME National Hub at IIT Kanpur and has been involved with the TCS program on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering since its inception. Amarendra served as the AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting Professorship at IIT Bombay from 2009 to 2011. Amarendra received the Metallurgist of the Year Award from the Ministry of Steel, Government of India in 2014 and TCS Distinguished Scientist Award in 2011. Amarendra is a Fellow of IIM, and a life member of IIM, MRSI and ISHMT.
