Apres la bataille d'Aigus Pot Amos, en 405 avant J.-C., la situation d'Athenes est desastreuse: l'armee defaite, les Longs Murs rases, le tresor epuise, le bref mais meurtrier gouvernement des Trente, autant de malheurs, en quelques annees, ont fondu sur Athenes et la brillante cite qu'avait connue le poete au debut de sa carriere est desormais exsangue. Le ton de son oeuvre s'en ressent: les circonstances sont si lamentables que le poete n'a plus guere le coeur d'en rire. La satire politique, qui n'est cependant pas absente de ces deux pieces s'adoucit pour laisser la place a une comedie plus axee sur les moeurs et la societe. Dans L'Assemblee des femmes, Praxagora et ses consoeurs empruntent les vetements de leurs maris et font voter la mise en commun non seulement des biens mais aussi des corps, assortis des quelques privileges: c'est ainsi que la piece se clot sur les tourments d'un jeune homme poursuivi des assiduites d'une horde d'ancetres desireuses de faire valoir les prerogatives que l'age, en vertu des nouvelles lois, leur accorde. Dans Ploutos, la Richesse en personne, guerie de la cecite a laquelle Zeus l'a condamne, instaure lui aussi un ordre nouveau, ou sont recompenses les justes, au grand dam des sycophantes et de quelques vieilles n'ayant plus de quoi entretenir les complaisances de leurs mignons. Notre edition rassemble en un volume les deux dernieres comedies qui nous sont parvenues sous le nom d'Aristophane. Le contexte historique, indispensable pour comprendre l'oeuvre du poete, est presente en details. Chaque piece est precedee d'une notice qui lui est propre. Celle-ci rappelle rapidement l'argument, fait le point sur la situation d'Athenes au moment ou la piece fut representee, et fournit de judicieuses pistes de lecture. Des notes accompagnent le texte. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi de deux brefs complements bibliographiques.
