Arminius und Siegfried dienten einst als patriotische Vorbilder und auch heute noch spielen sie im kulturellen Leben Deutschlands eine gewisse Rolle. Es umgibt sie der Mythos des stereotypen germanischen Helden, der sich in mehreren hundert Jahren entwickelte und stets im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte der deutschen Nation, Literatur und des deutschen Nationalbewusstseins stand. Der germanische Held als patriotisches und moralisches Vorbild nahm auf diese Weise teil am politischen Zeitgeschehen Deutschlands. Vor allem die literarische Rezeption des Arminius-, beziehungsweise Siegfriedstoffes hat für die Bildung, Ausformung, Verbreitung und Instrumentalisierung des Germanenmythos gesorgt. Im 19. Jahrhundert erlebte der Stoff einen literarischen Höhepunkt, der sogar zu der Annahme führte, dass Arminius und Siegfried ein und dieselbe Person seien. Doch was genau machte den germanischen Helden aus? Mit welchen heroischen Merkmalen versahen die Literaten Arminius und Siegfried und trafen diese tatsächlich auf beide zu? Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Daniela Sechtig präsentiert eine umfassende Untersuchung zum Bild des germanischen Helden von den Ursprüngen bis ins 19. Jahrhundert und anhand der Stücke Die Hermannsschlacht von Christian Dietrich Grabbe (1836) und Die Nibelungen von Friedrich Hebbel (1855-60) - zwei der eigenwilligsten und bedeutensten deutschen Tragiker ihrer Zeit. Welches Bild von Hermann / Siegfried entwickelten die beiden Autoren im Vergleich zu ihren Vorgängern und den Quellen? Inwieweit stimmen diese Bilder mit dem Germanenmythos des 19. Jahrhunderts überein, und vor allem, welche Änderungen wurden von Grabbe und Hebbel vorgenommen? In diesem Buch werden die Heldenkonzeptionen der beiden Dramatiker dargelegt und miteinander verglichen. Auch die Intentionen der Autoren hinsichtlich ihrer Geschichtsauffassung und der daraus entwickelten Rolle des Helden werden erläutert.
