Dieses Zitat von Mark Twain scheint auf den ersten Blick sehr verwundernd, trifft die Problematik jedoch auf den Punkt. Arme Menschen werden von den Banken nicht mit Darlehen versorgt, obwohl diese einen Kredit am dringendsten brauchen könnten. Ihnen wird von Seiten des Instituts die Kreditwürdigkeit abgesprochen, da es ihnen an Sicherheiten, welche im Falle eines Ausfalls verwertet werden könnten, mangelt. Wer jedoch das Darlehen absichern kann, benötigt es eigentlich nicht, denn er verfügt dann über genügend finanzielle Mittel. Da die benachteiligten Menschen von Finanztransaktionen jeglicher Art ausgeschlossen sind - vielen wird sogar die Eröffnung eines Kontos verwehrt - haben sie keine Möglichkeit, aus eigener Kraft der Armut zu entkommen. Auf Grund dessen bleibt den armen Menschen nur die Wahl zwischen der Resignation bezüglich der mangelnden Unterstützung oder aber der Flucht in die Hände von privaten Geldverleihern, um dort ein (sehr teures) Darlehen für die Materialbeschaffung aufzunehmen, damit sie ihre selbständige Tätigkeit, wie beispielsweise das Anfertigen von Bambusstühlen, aufrecht erhalten und ein kleines Einkommen generieren können. Der Friedensnobelpreisträger Muhammad Yunus erkannte diese Problematik und suchte nach Wegen, den benachteiligten Personen in diesem Bereich helfen zu können. Nach anfänglicher Bürgschaft von Yunus gegenüber den Banken, was allerdings keine Dauerlösung darstellen konnte, gründete er ein eigenes Institut, die Grameen-Bank, welche die Darlehen ausgibt. Die Bürger unterhalb der Armutsgrenze benötigen lediglich geringe finanzielle Mittel um der Armut zu entkommen, weshalb Yunus ihnen sogenannte Mikr
