On a beaucoup écrit sur l'art... même et surtout ceux qui n'y entendent rien. Si j'ose m'en mêler à mon tour, c'est seulement, - une fois n'est pas coutume, - pour le faire en artiste, j'entends en homme du métier, qui a mis la main à la pâte, comme on dit à l'atelier, et, n'eût-il fait qu'entrevoir en son sincère labeur la lointaine beauté des choses, qui sait du moins ce dont il parle et parle de ce qui le regarde. Nous autres artistes, nous comprenons mal en effet que des indiscrets, nous disons volontiers des profanes, se permettent de juger à tout propos des vérités les plus hautes de notre art, et nous aurions souvent envie de nous fâcher de l'air qu'ils se donnent de vouloir nous diriger, si nous n'aimions mieux sourire de la prétention qu'ils ont de connaître, sans les avoir jamais apprises, les choses les plus techniques de notre métier. Orgueil si l'on veut, mais de cet orgueil est fuite la confiance, ou la conscience de l'artiste, et sa dignité. C'est que l'art, pour toute âme haute ou seulement sincère, est avant tout, est toujours un acte de foi. Aimer et croire, n'est-ce pas la raison profonde de penser et d'agir ? Le Beau, je le crois fermement, est une communion où viennent les plus libres esprits; et tout artiste, si indépendantes que soient sa pensée et son action, est toujours, dans une certaine mesure, solidaire de tous les artistes. Il y a vraiment une religion de l'art, et il n'y a pas d'art sans une religion de l'esprit, qui est l'idéal. Pour nous qui le servons et qu'un même amour unit sous la diversité des âmes, notre joie nous suffit, ou noire peine, à toujours chercher, à désirer toujours. Le travail, cette rédemption de chaque jour, est notre santé intellectuelle, et au fond peut-être notre meilleure récompense...
