About the Book

In Art of Penobscot Bay, brothers Carl and David Little explore the beauty and breadth of this legendary body of water through the work of more than one hundred artists. The book includes an impressive line-up, from earlier painters like Fitz Henry Lane, Marsden Hartley, and John Marin to contemporaries such as Yvonne Jacquette, Lois Dodd, and Siri Beckman. In responding to the picturesque towns and harbors that circle Penobscot Bay and the islands scattered across its waters, the featured artists draw on a multitude of styles and approaches to fulfill their individual visions. Their sense of place may be as specific as the breakwater on remote Matinicus Island or as broad as a sweeping coastal vista. Within these pagers, seascapes, images of working waterfronts, all manner of vessels, and harbor scenes abound. An important visual exploration of a beloved region in Maine and a popular place to visit. Art of Penobscot Bay is the fourth collaboration between Carl and David Little. Their previous books focused on art inspired by Mount Katahdin, Acadia National Park, and Portland, Maine
About the Author: Born and raised in New York City, Carl Little holds degrees from Dartmouth, Columbia, and Middlebury. Little is the author of more than 30 art books, including The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper's New England. He has written monographs on many artists, including Dahlov Ipcar, Joel Babb, Jeffery Becton, and Irene Olivieri. His book Eric Hopkins: Above and Beyond won the first John Cole Prize from the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance in 2012. He edited his brother David Little's Art of Katahdin and co-authored Art of Acadia and Paintings of Portland with him. Little writes for Art New England, Hyperallergic, Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, The Working Waterfront, Island Journal and Ornament. He helped produce several Maine Masters films, including the award-winning Imber's Left Hand about the painter Jon Imber. In 2021 the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation honored Little with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his art writing. He lives and writes on Mount Desert Island.

David Little is both author and artist. He is the author of Art of Katahdin, winner of a Boston Globe "Best of New England" award for non-fiction. He co-authored Art of Acadia and Paintings of Portland with his brother Carl. Over the years, Little's career as a plein-air landscape painter gradually interwoven with his love of art history and research in Katahdin-themed exhibitions he curated at the Bates College Museum of Art in 2007 and the University of New England Art Gallery in 2013. A native New Yorker, Little holds an MFA in studio art from the University of Iowa. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture twice and has had residencies at the Carina House on Monhegan and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His work has been shown in galleries and museums across the northeast. He lives with his wife, Mikki, in Portland, Maine.
