About the Book

Author Cliff Dochterman's second book, As I Was Saying..., is filled with generous humor, a cajoling wit, and a world of inspiration. In it, Dochterman does his utmost to motivate fellow Rotary Club members to achieve their best and to serve the communities in which they live. A former worldwide president of Rotary International, Dochterman offers this inspiring collection of twenty-three of his favorite speeches. In twenty-four chapters with titles like "You Can Change the Life for Someone," "Friendly Fire of Rotary," and "Rotary's Original Idea - Vocational Service," the author weaves a history of what life is like behind the podium and shares a number of stories of the humanitarian experiences he had as he traveled the world as Rotary president. Intimate and yielding, readers come to realize that, while there is suffering in the world and poverty in their own backyard, by opening up discussions-by learning to speak, listen, and serve-the world inherently becomes a better place.
About the Author: It has been said that Cliff Dochterman has spoken to more Rotary Clubs than anyone in the world. Over the past fifty years, he has served in almost every Rotary assignment, from Berkeley Rotary Club president to worldwide President of Rotary International in 1992-93. He has traveled the world on humanitarian projects and has been honored by the heads of state in many nations. He had a 45-year career as an administrator at University of California at Berkeley and the University of the Pacific in Stockton. He has had a lifetime association with the Boy Scouts of America, and is a former president of the local Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the county Parks and Recreation Commission. Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge has recognized his speeches with the George Washington Honor Medal. He and his wife, Mary Elena belong to the Rotary Club of Moraga, near San Francisco, California.
