Astor Piazzolla (11/03/1921 - 4/07/1992) no sòlo fue el gran revolucionario del Tango y uno de los mejores instrumentistas de bandoneòn de la historia, sino que ademàs fue uno de los màs importantes y geniales compositores que diò la mùsica del siglo XX. Astor Piazzolla, desde la cuna, fue un cúmulo de contradicciones, rarezas y hechos excepcionales. Un ser "extra- ordinario" que sin dudas nació con la marca de los elegidos, de los geniales, pero que a ello le sumo mucho esfuerzo, trabajo y pasión. Piazzolla creció escuchando Tango en su hogar y Jazz fuera de él, se enamoró de Bach de pequeño mientras a la vez escuchaba en vivo a Cab Calloway o Duke Ellington. Y si bien nació en una ciudad marítima del Atlántico Sur (Mar del Plata) se crió en la ciudad más cosmopolita del mundo en su momento de ebullición y crecimiento. En New York recibió su primer bandoneón pero de regreso a su Mar del Plata natal aprendió a tocar el Tango; y luego se fue a desarrollarlo al lugar que tenía que ir, la capital universal del tango, la ciudad de Buenos Aires. A los 20 años ya era un precoz genio que tocaba el bandoneón y arreglaba temas para la mejor Orquesta Típica de la época de oro del tango clásico, la de Anibal Troilo. A los 23 ya estudiaba con Alberto Ginastera y soñaba con ser concertista de piano o componer sinfonías. Y todo se mezclaba, se arremolinaba en su ser: De Caro y Stravinsky, Vardaro y Bach, Gobbi y Art Tatum, Bartok y Gil Evans, Gardel y Chick Corea, Pugliese y Miles Davis, Laurenz & Maffia y Emerson Lake & Palmer. Pero lo novedoso, lo maravilloso, es que de ese cóctel musical salió algo único y distinto: salió la música de Piazzolla, que podríamos tipificar como un género en sí mismo. Una música que parte del Tango, que lo contiene además, que aglutina a los músicos nombrados más arriba (y muchos más) pero que a la vez tiene una identidad y personalidad propia. Porque, y esto debería estar muy claro a esta altura, Piazzolla no mató al Tango (como lo acusaron durante décadas), todo lo contrario: Piazzolla lo salvó, le dio nueva vida, lo hizo crecer, evolucionar.

En el presente volumen el especialista Marcelo Gobello (acadèmico de la Academia Nacional del Tango, la Academia Porteña del Lunfardo y miembro honorario de la Fundaciòn Astor Piazzolla que preside su viuda, Laura Escalada Piazzolla) realiza una ágil y medular recorrida por la trayectoria artística (y de vida) de Astor, haciendo especial hincapié en la creación del Quinteto Nuevo Tango en 1960 y en cómo llegó al mismo, ya que es vital y fundamental entender y conocer bien el derrotero de Astor.

Hay que destacar también un anexo dedicado a "Astor Piazzolla y el Cine" donde se destaca lo más importante de su producción de 42 bandas de sonido originales para películas a nivel nacional e internacional, una reveladora discografìa y exclusivo material fotogràfico. Se trata de un trabajo que mantiene la llama de la música y estilo de uno de los más grandes creadores, instrumentistas y compositores que ha dado, no sólo el siglo XX, sino la historia de la humanidad toda, porque su música (además de bella) es eterna e infinita.
