Le premier livre traite, entre autres, de la sphère céleste, sur les premiers auteurs de l'astronomie & sur les progrès des sciences humaines, de l'origine du monde, des opinions des philosophes, des éléments de la terre, du ciel & des astres, des signes du zodiaque & des constellations extrazodiacales.

Les second, troisième & quatrième livres sont désignés comme Isagogiques, c'est-à-dire, introducteurs ou préparatoires, parce qu'ils contiennent les définitions des différents sujets traités par Homère, Hésiode & d'autres poètes. Ils traitent des propriétés & l'énergie des astres: leur activité sur les corps terrestres est démontrée en plus des signes masculins, féminins, diurnes, nocturnes, terrestres, aqueux, amphibies, etc. On retrouve les divisions de chaque signe en douze dodécatémories et en douze maisons avec leurs propriétés & énergie célestes.

Manilius y traite également du zodiaque en douze athles ou sorts, dont le premier est celui de la fortune. Moyen de trouver le lieu de ce premier sort & de déterminer celui de l'horoscope, c'est-à-dire, le point de l'écliptique qui est à l'horizon dans la partie orientale du ciel, à tous les instants du jour & de la nuit. Le tout est terminé par la définition des signes tropiques, ou qui président aux maisons, ce qui donne lieu à une belle description des quatre maisons de l'année.

Le cinquième livre est à notre avis supérieur à tous les précédents. Il contient une énumération des constellations extrazodiacales & des degrés des douze signes avec lesquels elles se lèvent. Leur lever inspire des inclinations, des moeurs, des caractères, porte à s'adonner à des arts, des professions, des métiers, dont les descriptions, vraiment poétiques, occupent presque tout le livre. Ces descriptions sont entremêlées d'épisodes: on y remarque surtout le bel épisode d'Andromède, que plusieurs savants critiques ont jugé digne de Virgile. Le livre est terminé par la distinction connue des étoiles en six différentes grandeurs.
