About the Book

Atlas isn't a fairy-princess-pink-and-purple-unicorn. He doesn't have a swirly-curly mane and tail, and he doesn't fly. Atlas is a happy, curious, busy farm horse in disguise. And now that we know him, we know unicorns can be found everywhere, even on the farm down the mountain. Atlas was a sad, skinny rescue horse when he came to live with author Theresa LaBrecque on her Fairy Farm in Northwood, New Hampshire. She tells his story with the love she has for him, and we see him overcoming his rough beginning and growing healthy and strong on every page. Atlas is involved in nearly every activity on the farm, from helping the local carpenter to tending the herd of lively goats to sharing down-time with the author and her dog-indoors. The soft watercolors by illustrator Elizabeth Moisan are well drawn and not cartoony. They capture Atlas's personality and activities, and faithfully compliment the text and tone of the story. Atlas: Northwood's Unicorn is written for 6-10 year-olds, although younger children will like to look at the pictures and hear the story read aloud. Horse and unicorn fans alike will enjoy the gentle story of Atlas and the Fairy Farm.
About the Author: Theresa LaBrecque lives on Fairy Farm, in New Hampshire, with her chickens, goats, her bull terrier, Panda, and Atlas. She loved whimsy, fairies, and nature as a child, and it was during the time she lived on Cape Cod that she added whales and mermaids to the list. This delightful mix of interests is reflected in her paintings and sculpture, as well as in her first two books. There is a gift shop on her farm where she sells her art and books, along with goat milk and cheese, and eggs. On the Fairy Farm you will find a happy family of animals, and some of the kindest neighbors in the world. Theresa has written and illustrated two other books, "Tea Time for Mermaids" and "A Whale of a Good Time". They are available in her farm shop, and on her web site. Please visit: www.labrecqueart.com for information and to contact Theresa. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Elizabeth Moisan, a native New Yorker, has worked professionally as an artist since graduating from Parsons School of Design in 1970. In addition to a forty-plus year career as a designer in the home-furnishings industry, she has done illustration, set design, and taken on watercolor and portrait commissions. She is an Arts and Letters member of the Cape Cod Branch of the National League of American Pen Women; the founding host of A Book in the Hand and Shelf Space, two literary programs; the facilitator of a writing group; and founder and member of Just Plain Folk, a folk music group that performs locally. Elizabeth is also the author of "Master of the Sweet Trade: A Story of the Pirate Samuel Bellamy, Mariah Hallett, and the Whydah", her debut novel. A 13th generation Mayflower descendant, she lives on Cape Cod, a short distance from the setting of her book.
