L'histoire de la messagerie postale en France à l'époque contemporaine n'avait jamais été écrite. Jamais écrite donc, l'histoire de la circulation des objets à travers ce réseau institué et géré par la puissance publique qu'est la Poste. Le sujet est pourtant important, et n'a cessé depuis le 19e siècle de faire débat: fallait-il faire du transport et de la distribution de ces objets sur tout le territoire un service public ? Ces millions d'objets échangés entre fournisseurs et clients, commerçants et particuliers, familles et amis, villes et campagnes que la distance sépare, valaient-ils de prendre le risque de ralentir la circulation des mots, portés par les lettres et les cartes postales ? Valaient-ils de priver d'autres opérateurs, routiers, ferroviaires, aériens, d'une activité concurrentielle rémunératrice ? La trajectoire de la messagerie postale en France a largement dépendu des réponses fluctuantes à ces interrogations, autant économiques que politiques.

En explorant les deux siècles qui précèdent l'explosion du trafic des colis en France, ce livre révèle une conquête et dessine peut-être un avenir, celui de la Poste comme actrice centrale en matière de logistique. Il montre sur quelles fondations, qu'il s'agisse d'expériences ou de réflexions, profondes et fragiles à la fois, la Poste a pu s'appuyer pour prendre la place qu'elle occupe désormais sur le marché capital de la messagerie. Au passage, il ouvre une fenêtre sur l'importance croissante des objets dans la construction des agencements sociaux.


About the Author:

Léonard Laborie est historien, chargé de recherche au CNRS, UMR Sirice (Sorbonne-Identités, Relations Internationales, Civilisations de l'Europe), Centre de recherche en histoire de l'innovation. Ses travaux se situent à la croisée de l'histoire des techniques et de l'histoire des relations internationales. Ils portent principalement sur les réseaux de communication à distance, dans une perspective d'histoire transnationale de l'Europe et de la globalisation.

Sébastien Richez est historien au comité pour l'histoire de La Poste (CHP). Il travaille sur les représentations de l'institution contemporaine depuis la Révolution, abordant entre autres les territoires et la Poste, ses figures ainsi que ses médiations sociétales, politiques et économiques.
