Eine schwarzgekleidete Frau, in noch jugendlicher Fülle blühend, saß in dem kleinen Kontor am Schreibtisch, ein schweres kaufmännisches Buch vor sich, und reihte mit ihrer leichten, heiteren Schrift Eintragungen geschäftlichen Inhalts aneinander. Emsig und akkurat füllte sie die steilen Kolonnen mit Zahlen, die sie aus geschichteten Papieren ablas, und wenn ihrer genug auf einer Seite standen, so zog sie mit dem Lineal einen waghalsigen Strich aus Tinte darunter und zählte zusammen. Hierauf übertrug sie das Ergebnis stracks oben auf das nächste Blatt und machte sich vergnüglich daran, Stufe für Stufe von der gewonnenen Höhe wieder herabzusteigen, auf den Leitersprossen der vorgezeichneten Linien. Eben im Begriffe, eine neue Zeile zu bezwingen, stutzte sie ein wenig - aber bloß einen Augenblick, fuhr dann rasch mit Schreiben fort und sagte, ohne aufzusehen: Hundertdreißig Ellen, das wär' sonst gar nicht übel; nur komisch - jedesmal, wenn ich eine Dreizehn hinschreiben soll, so gibt's mir einen kleinen Stich. Wenn ohnedies eine Null hintendran steht! sagte in seiner borstigen Art Herr Baudrillard, an den diese Worte gerichtet waren. Es bleibt halt doch eine Dreizehn, meinte die junge Frau, während sie bedächtig die Feder über dem Tintenfasse ausschnellte. Und leise in sich hineinlachend, weil sie wußte, daß Herr Baudrillard jetzt wütend war, beugte sie sich wieder über ihren Folianten. Herr Baudrillard, der am andern Fenster der Schreibstube vor einer mächtigen Wage stand, konnte sich's nicht versagen, eine kleine Kundgebung gegen den Aberglauben zu veranstalten. Unwirsch ließ er die messingenen Gewichte in die leere kupferne Wagschale fallen, eins nach dem andern, Schlag auf Schlag, erst die größeren, daß es dröhnte, dann die kleineren und kleinsten, mit herausforderndem Geklapper - bis die Zunge der Wage endlich zu schwingen aufhörte und lotrecht stillestand wie der Zeiger einer Turmuhr, die auf Mittag weist.
