Duitsland en het Duitse leger verloren twee achtereenvolgende oorlogen. De conclusie die veelal wordt getrokken is dat het Duitse leger niet was opgewassen tegen zijn tegenstanders, waardoor ze het onderspit wel moest delven. Het is een beeld dat voortdurend wordt versterkt in de literatuur en in de media.

Als we echter de relatieve battlefieldperformance van het Duitse leger bekijken, ontdekken we dat deze minimaal 150% (soms wel 300%) hoger was dan die van de westelijke Geallieerden: tegenover 1 gedode of gewonde Duitse soldaat, stonden minimaal 1,5 gedode of gewonde Geallieerde soldaten.

De vraag die in dit boek centraal staat is waarom het Duitse leger een zoveel hogere battlefieldperformance had dan al haar tegenstanders. Vanuit het oogpunt van organisatie- en bedrijfskunde, sociologie en psychologie worden het Duitse leger en haar tegenstanders geanalyseerd. En dan wordt duidelijk waarom hier sprake is van een echte high performance organisation en welke mythen het Engelse en Amerikaanse leger omgeven.

Jaap Jan Brouwer is auteur van een groot aantal managementboeken en boeken over militaire organisaties. Van zijn hand verschenen eerder 'Schaduwen over de Woestijn: Strategie, management en organisatie van het Duitse, Britse en Amerikaanse leger van 1918 tot 1943', 'Het Oostfront: Hoe het Duitse Rijk zijn einde op de steppe vond', 'Militaire uitvindingen voor de dagelijkse praktijk' en 'Guderian: Opkomst en ondergang van het Duitse pantserwapen'. Hij heeft bij diverse adviesbureaus gewerkt. De laatste twintig jaar heeft hij een eigen adviesbureau, gericht op strategie- en organisatieontwikkelingsvraagstukken.

Ruud Veen is de auteur van het hoofdstuk over de gevechten bij Overloon. Hij is officier bij de Koninklijke Landmacht, heeft verscheidene functies bij gevechts- en gevechtsondersteunende eenheden vervuld en nam deel aan de KFOR-missie in 2007. Hij is momenteel Hoofd van de sectie Logistiek van het Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando.
