Das Leben des deutschen Kunsthistorikers August Grisebach (1881-1950) fallt in die wohl dramatischste Epoche der deutschen Geschichte. Als Kunsthistoriker hat Grisebach, der 1901 in Berlin sein Studium begann, im Kaiserreich, in der Weimarer Republik, im Nationalsozialismus sowie in der jungen Bundesrepublik gearbeitet, und dies an so unterschiedlichen Orten wie Berlin, Breslau, Rom und Heidelberg.Grisebach gehort nicht zu jenen durch ihr Charisma beeindruckenden "Altmeistern" des Fachs, auf welche die Geschichte der Kunstgeschichte gerne reduziert wird. Doch hat er als Schuler Wolfflins und Goldschmidts sowie als Kollege und Altersgenosse Max Dvoraks, Wilhelm Worringers, Wilhelm Pinders, Kurt Gerstenbergs, Albert E. Brinckmanns, Curt Glasers, Friedrich Antals, Walter Friedlanders, Julius Baums, Dagobert Freys, Wilhelm Waetzolds, Hans Tietzes oder Ernst Galls die Entwicklung des Fachs in einer Zeit mitgestaltet, als die Kunstgeschichte in Deutschland ihren Durchbruch zum "Massenfach" erlebte. Als uberzeugter Formalist gehort Grisebach zu den Begrundern der Kunstgeographie Deutschlands und pragte eine Anschauungsweise, die Harald Keller in den funfziger Jahren auf die "Kunstlandschaften" Italiens und Frankreichs ubertragen sollte.Doch wurde auch Grisebach selbst durch seine Zeit in zuletzt bedruckender Weise gepragt und gezeichnet. Als ein die grossburgerlichen Werte der Jahrhundertwende kompromisslos lebender Liberaler wurde er in Heidelberg, wo sich der mythische "Geist" nach 1933 rasch zum Gespenst verwandelte, von den Nationalsozialisten behordlich verfolgt und 1937 - auch wegen seiner judischen Ehefrau - zwangspensioniert. Nach dem Krieg musste er bei seiner Ruckkehr aus dem inneren Exil in Potsdam nach Heidelberg erleben, dass die Opfer von den alten Mitlaufern keineswegs mit offenen Armen empfangen wurden.Erstmals sind hier auch hundert Briefe publiziert, die Heinrich Wolfflin an seinen Schuler Grisebach zwischen 1902 und 1944 - seinem Sterbejahr - geschrieben hat. Das Leben Grisebach sowie die Zeit- und Fachgeschichte spiegeln sich in diesen Dokumenten ebenso wie die Person Wolfflins, der Grisebach zeitlebens ein liebevoller, fursorglicher Lehrer geblieben ist.
