"Ouvrage politiquement peu correct", jugea un éditeur parisien à la lecture du manuscrit de ce roman. Si cet éditeur manqua d'honnêteté en le refusant, il n'en a pas moins eu raison sur le politiquement incorrect. Car Michel Cornillon ne s'est pas soucié de plaire au prince lorsqu'il a mis ce livre en chantier. Il en a même profité pour dire ce qu'il pensait du sionisme et de la politique israélienne actuelle, laquelle est aussi celle de nombre de nations paraît-il évoluées. Car si l'action se déroule de septembre 1944 au 30 avril 45 (mort de Hitler), elle est narrée à l'époque actuelle par les deux cousins juifs, profession clowns, qui en furent les protagonistes. Ce qui permet au narrateur de juger les événements d'alors selon les lumières actuelles. Dès qu'ils reniflent en quel lieu les a conduits leur voyage de cinq jours en wagons à bestiaux, Yitzhak et Mordekhaï détalent comme des lapins à l'intérieur des barbelés d'Auschwitz. À la suite de quoi, travestis en SS et prenant en otage la femme du commandant, ils deviennent au black les véritables maîtres du lieu. Autoproclamés Vengeurs des Peuples, et rapidement alliés à quelques autres détenus, ils vont rendre à leurs "collègues" SS la monnaie de leur pièce. Les sévices infligés aux déportés vont ainsi s'appliquer à ces pauvres nazis, qui en verront de vertes et de pas mûres, à commencer par un bon coup sur la cafetière suivi d'un passage immédiat au grill. D'autre part, cette inversion de la réalité en transformera le côté effroyable en un carnaval ou chacun pourra s'exprimer, c'est-à-dire se tailler à coups de pelle, de barre de fer et de planche à clous un chemin vers le rire et la liberté. Le lecteur suivra donc, principalement par les yeux de Yitzhak, les exploits tantôt hilarants, tantôt tragiques et parfois même épouvantables que vont accomplir nos héros depuis la nuit de leur arrivée jusqu'à l'évacuation du camp en janvier 45, puis de leurs "marches de la mort" à leur visite au bunker du Führer.
