Die Arbeit erweist die von 1906 bis 1937 entstandene Prosa Else Lasker-Schülers als paradigmatisch für die literarische Moderne und erarbeitet eine völlig neue Perspektivierung ihrer charakteristischen Figuren und Verfahren. Durch intertextuelle Bezüge und strukturelle Analogien zu Nietzsche, Freud, Weininger, Kafka, Martin Buber u.a. sind die Texte auf vielfache Weise in zeitgenössische Diskurse eingebettet, andererseits bergen sie ein besonderes Analysepotential im Hinblick auf Raumkonzepte, Genderdiskurse und Körperkonstruktionen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. »Das Peter Hille-Buch«, »Die Nächte der Tino von Bagdad«, »Der Prinz von Theben« oder »Der Malik« u.a. stellen Grenzen und Krisen der Repräsentation zur Schau, indem sie die Problematik einer Verkörperung symbolischer Macht am Beispiel von Herrscherfiguren erkunden. Souveränität erscheint dabei über die thematischen Konstellationen hinausweisend als radikale Reflexionsfigur von Autorschaft und Subjektautonomie. Die diskursanalytisch, kulturanthropologisch und psychosemiotisch argumentierende Untersuchung bezieht historische und biographische Aspekte (Erster Weltkrieg, Zionismus, nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung, Exil etc.) ausdrücklich mit ein und eröffnet den poststrukturalistischen Theorieansätzen damit eine politische und historische Dimension. Ein eigenes Kapitel behandelt diejenigen Texte, die wie etwa »Der Wunderrabbiner von Barcelona«, »Der Scheik« oder »Das Hebräerland« die Begegnung der Religionen gestalten. In überraschender Nähe zu Ansätzen des jüdischen Philosophen Emmanuel Lévinas entwerfen diese, so wird gezeigt, eine moderne Ethik der Differenz, die dem Fremden im Eigenen Raum gibt und ohne transzendente Sinnbezüge auskommt.
