Bajo el título La aventura del Amazonas se publicó una antología que comprende este texto de Gaspar de Carvajal juntos a otros documentos escritos por otros conquistadores. La presente edición incluye solo la crónica de Carvajal. En Linkgua hemos publicado una antología, independiente de esta, con el título de Descubrimiento del río de las Amazonas. Esta contiene las crónicas de otros participantes en la expedición.

En diciembre de 1541, el capitán Francisco de Orellana, con medio centenar de hombres y el fraile dominico Gaspar de Carvajal, abandonó el campamento de Gonzalo Pizarro para buscar alimentos. Alcanzaron la confluencia del Napo y el Trinidad, pero no encontraron provisiones. Sin poder volver atrás por la fuerza de la corriente, decidieron seguir río abajo, hasta llegar a la desembocadura del Amazonas.

Orellana y sus hombres se vieron, con escasos medios físicos. Así recorriendo el gran río hoy llamado Amazonas y realizando la primera navegación completa de su curso, desde los Andes ecuatorianos hasta el mar Atlántico. El 11 de septiembre del siguiente año, 1542, se puso fin a esta odisea marítima con el desembarco, en la isla de Cubagua (Nueva Cádiz).

Francisco de Orellana tras sobrevivir a la travesía del viaje por la Amazonia, regresó a España y fue acusado de traición por Gonzalo Pizarro.

Gaspar de Carvajal, dejó escrita la relación de dicho viaje. Aquí en todo momento pone especial cuidado en dejar clara la inocencia de Orellana, restableciendo la honra y resguardando la fama de su capitán.

Los datos de la expedición, registrados por fray Gaspar de Carvajal proporcionan información de gran interés etnológico. Describen


la disposición y tamaño de los poblados,

ocupación continua a lo largo de las barrancas del río,

caminos amplios que comunican el río Amazonas con la tierra firme,

tácticas de guerra,

rituales,

costumbres

y utensilios aborígenes.


A su regreso al Perú, Carvajal fue elegido subprior del convento de San Rosario en Lima. En este puesto, fue elegido para arbitrar entre el virrey, y los auditores de la Real Audiencia en 1554. Después de la pacificación del Perú, fue enviado por sus superiores como misionero a Tucumán, siendo nombrado protector de los indios.
