Quelques vieilles photos retrouvées. Des souvenirs qui reviennent. L'envie de remonter le fil de leurs vies . Des vies pas tout à fait ordinaires . Ils étaient mes grands-parents. Ils m'ont inspiré ce récit . Avant d'émigrer en France, ils venaient d'un pays qui n'existait plus depuis bien longtemps . Constamment convoitée par les empires européens, la Pologne a en effet perdu son indépendance en 1775 et a été plusieurs fois partagée au gré des conflits .A l'orée du xxeme siècle, mes grands-parents paternels habitaient Lodz, la capitale du textile de l'empire russe . Un véritable Eldorado pour de nombreux européens de l'est . Elzbieta et Jozef s'y voyaient un bel avenir . Aniela et Andzrej, mes grands-parents maternels, de modestes paysans, vivaient à Slemien, un petit village de Galicie, la région la plus reculée et la plus pauvre de l'empire d'Autriche .Les uns ont quitté leur pays pour fuir le communisme soviétique . La misère a fait partir les autres . En brossant leur portrait, je raconte aussi l'histoire de la Pologne sur plus d'un siècle ainsi que la vie des émigrés polonais dans le bassin houiller du Nord-Pas de Calais. La première partie du roman, LES TEMPS AGITÉS, décrit leur jeunesse dans une Pologne éclatée où les guerres et révolutions se succèdent qui les conduit à partir en France . Là-bas, ils sont d'abord confrontés à la xénophobie anti-polak . Ils devront également subir une nouvelle guerre et une nouvelle occupation . La deuxième partie, LES TEMPS CALMES, (où je puise également dans mes souvenirs de jeunesse)s'attarde sur leur vie d'après guerre dans une France qui prospère .Alors que dans le même temps on assiste grâce aux liens conservés avec leurs familles restées en Pologne à l'étiolement d'un pays sous le joug des soviétiques . Le dernier de mes grands-parents décèdera peu de temps avant que la Pologne ne retrouve sa liberté en 1989 . L'ÉPILOGUE nous projette dans leurs cités natales, 30 ans après la chute du communisme . Trois exemples de la renaissance d'un pays aujourd'hui libre de construire son avenir comme il l'entend .
