Crocodilians are a group of large, predatory semiaquatic reptiles that first appeared over 83 million years ago and are the closest living relatives of birds. With life spans ranging from 30-100 years, these solidly-built, lizard-like reptiles have laterally compressed tails, long flattened snouts with eyes, ears and nostrils at the top of the head. In addition to being good swimmers, they're surprisingly fast on land, moving at speeds ranging from 10-22mph, though they rarely chase humans. Their conical, peg-like teeth are very sharp and the jaws are capable of powerful bites. Their thick skin is covered with non-overlapping scales and is sought for leather goods. Found mainly in the lowlands of the tropics, with some species of alligator and crocodile also quite prominent features of the southeastern United States. The crocodilian diet consists mainly of animals such as fish, crustaceans, birds, mollusks and mammals. Some species, like the Indian gharial, are specialized feeders and others, such as the salt water crocodile, have general diets.
