About the Book
Wallaby Rock is a fictional New South Wales town surrounded by scrubby bush and with
a nearby rocky gorge cut through by a river. Since European settlement, disturbing things have happened.
Living in Wallaby Rock is 18-year-old Laura, whose Irish lineage has given her the gift of second sight. It's a gift she's never wanted. A gift that has marked her as a misfit, left her with few friends and plagues her with frightening dreams of the past and a Shadow Man who lurks in the darkness.
Also living in Wallaby Rock is Gary Wilson-a relatively new member of the community-whose ancestor Jeremiah Pyke was one of the area's earliest white settlers. Gary had a rough upbringing and moved to the district seeking connection and a purpose.
At Wallaby Rock, he finds it.
Gary is a serial killer.
When the twin brothers of Laura's one true friend, Joanna, are found dead at the bottom of the gorge, the coroner's findings are inconclusive.
Joanna doesn't believe her brothers' deaths were an accident. She tells Laura the boys knew to stay away from the gorge because her father believes it's cursed land-bad country. Laura discovers that Joanna's ancestor and Jeremiah Pyke were bitter enemies. This feud led to the murder of a convict and newborn baby at the gorge, spawning rumours the place is haunted.
Months later, the body of German fruit picker Yvette Berger is found.
Next, 17-year-old high school student, Mia Stevens goes missing.
Media highlight the high number of deaths and disappearances in the area over the past 160 years and question the investigation led by local policeman, Sergeant Mick Peters. A squad of police recruits are brought in to assist with the search for Mia Stevens. Police cadet Erica Martin stays with the Murrays during the search, and Laura and Erica soon become friends.
Meanwhile, Laura is wrestling with dreams of increasing frequency and intensity and is shocked when the Shadow Man suddenly has the same face as the man who stopped her to ask for directions. Laura dreams of this man pushing the convict and baby off the cliff at the gorge before her dream morphs and she sees him dragging something heavy out of the back of his car at a nearby lake. Laura tells the police about her dreams. Erica believes Laura and convinces Mick the young woman is genuine. A chance examination of Gary Wilson's car by a local mechanic raises questions about suspected blood stains under the vehicle. The discovery of a body at the lake Laura dreamt of, her testimony and forensic evidence taken from the vehicle, lead Mick and Erica to set a trap to capture Gary.
Could Gary's arrest end the centuries-long chain of events that paints Wallaby Rock as bad country?
Bad Country explores the concept of psychogeography. There has always been a strong connection between people and place. But how deeply does our geographical environment shape our emotions and behaviours?
Is it possible that evil deeds not only affect victims and their families for generations but can mark the landscape?
Bad Country is targeted at young adults, aged 18-21, but will also appeal to the adult market.
