Bailén es la cuarta novela de la primera serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. Gabriel sale milagrosamente con vida del fusilamiento del 2 de mayo al ser recogido agonizante por unos vecinos de Madrid. Durante su convalecencia se entera gracias a Juan de Dios que su amada Inés se ha trasladado a Córdoba con su madre secreta la Condesa. Una vez restablecido, se pone junto con Santorcaz camino de Córdoba; será testigo de la Contienda de Valdepeñas y luego se detendrá en Bailén al oír que la milicia se está organizando para combatir a los franceses. Consciente de que el nuevo estatus social de Inés hace imposible su amor, y también llevado por el patriotismo, entrará en el ejército como soldado/criado del Mayorazgo Don Diego de Rumblar, un joven ignorante e influenciable perteneciente a la alta nobleza andaluza. La Condesa y la madre de Don Diego han concertado el matrimonio de éste con Inés, con la esperanza de reunir los títulos y fortuna de ambas familias. Una vez alistado, Gabriel y Don Diego conocerán a Santorcaz, un soldado de oscuro pasado, que ha pasado largo tiempo en Francia, y que se convierte en una gran influencia para Don Diego, con sus ideas afrancesadas opuestas a la anticuada educación de Don Diego. Finalmente los ejércitos español y francés se enfrentan en la Batalla de Bailén, que concluye con una victoria para los españoles. Durante la confusión de la batalla, Gabriel monta el caballo de Santorcaz, y descubre en el morral unas cartas dirigidas a la Condesa, por las que deduce que Santorcaz es el padre de Inés. Tras la batalla, Don Diego es capturado por los franceses, apareciendo ebrio a los dos días. Don Diego relata su estancia en el campamento francés a su madre, en un divertido episodio en el que se pone en evidencia las diferencias entre el nuevo mundo, representado por los soldados franceses, y el viejo mundo, representado por la señora de Rumblar. Gabriel va a Córdoba, donde Inés se ha recluido en un convento como novicia contra la voluntad de su nueva familia. Gabriel consigue hablar con Inés, le hace saber que está vivo, y la convence para que salga del convento. También se entrevista con la Condesa, a la que pone en aviso de la peligrosa influencia de Santorcaz sobre Don Diego, de su conocimiento sobre la paternidad de Inés y también le confiesa su amor por Inés. La Condesa lo expulsa de su casa horrorizada.
