About the Book

Der vierte Band der Ausgabe der Briefe von Therese Huber (1764--1829) enthält die Briefe der Jahre 1810 und 1811.

Die Lektüre von Büchern zu historischen Themen von der Antike bis zur Französischen Revolution und den Koalitionskriegen sowie von Zeitungsmeldungen führen Huber immer wieder zur Auseinandersetzung mit der aktuellen Situation Bayerns und Deutschlands angesichts der Ausdehnung der Herrschaft Napoleons über ganz Europa. Mit ihrer Bewunderung für Frankreich und seinen Kaiser steht sie dabei im Gegensatz zu der aufkommenden nationalen Bewegung in Deutschland. Besuche in Ulm, Augsburg, München (Schauplatz des Konflikts zwischen nord- und süddeutschen Akademikern), Stuttgart, Bern und Neuchâtel geben Huber Gelegenheit zu eigenen Beobachtungen z.B. der wirtschaftlichen Probleme im Zeichen der Napoleonischen Kriege, der Grenzveränderungen und Kontinentalsperre. Als Autorin hat Huber infolge der Krise des deutschen Buchhandels Schwierigkeiten, für ihre Manuskripte Verleger zu finden. Andererseits wird ihre früher geheimgehaltene Autorschaft dem Publikum mehr und mehr bekannt, ihr Selbstvertrauen als Schriftstellerin durch den Erfolg ihres Reiseberichts »Bemerkungen über Holland« gestärkt. �ber Pädagogik diskutiert sie vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Bewerbung um eine Stelle als Vorsteherin einer schweizer Mädchenschule, der Krise des Pestalozzischen Institutes und der Gründungswelle von Erziehungsanstalten für Mädchen. Für die als Erzieherin tätige Tochter Therese Forster entwickelt Huber Konzepte für deren Unterrichtsgestaltung. Der Eintritt der Tochter Luise in die katholische Kirche wird von ihr respektiert und unterstützt. Huber nimmt lebhaften Anteil an Arbeitslosigkeit und persönlichen Schicksalsschlägen (Kriegsgefangenschaft während des Aufstandes der Tiroler, Tod der Mutter Caroline von Herder, Bankrott des Bruders Adelbert) ihres dadurch selbstmordgefährdeten Ziehsohnes Emil von Herder. Durch Lektürediskussionen und die Aussicht auf die Ehe mit ihrer Tochter Luise versucht Huber ihm eine Lebensperspektive zu geben.
