Die Arbeit schildert außerdem Optimierungsmaßnahmen, die von Banken ergriffen werden können, um die geschäftspolitischen Ziele weiterhin zu erreichen und gleichzeitig die neuen Anforderungen zu erfüllen. Die jüngsten Schlagzeilen über die heikle Situation einer spanischen Bank sorgen für Angst vor einer zukünftigen Bankenkrise. Der Grund für die kritische Situation des spanischen Kreditinstituts war eine signifikante Verschlechterung der Liquiditätslage in der kürzeren Vergangenheit des Instituts, sodass unsicher war, ob die Bank in der nahen Zukunft ihre Schulden und Verbindlichkeiten hätte bedienen können, was die Einlagen der Kunden in Gefahr brachte. Ein weiteres Problem der Bank ist jedoch ein Bestand von noch 37 Milliarden Euro an notleidenden Krediten aufgrund des Zusammenbruchs des spanischen Immobilienmarkts im Zuge der Finanzkrise von 2008, dessen Risiko nicht mit genügend Eigenkapital abgedeckt ist. Die oben geschilderte Situation verdeutlicht zwei grundlegende Herausforderungen, denen Banken sich stellen müssen. Zum einen verdeutlicht der benannte Fall die hohe Relevanz von Liquidität für die Überlebensfähigkeit der Kreditinstitute und zum anderen zeigt der hohe Bestand an risikoreichen Aktiva, wie wichtig es für Banken ist, genügend Eigenkapital zur Absicherung von Risiken vorzuhalten. Das zweite beschriebene Problem, das der zu geringen Eigenkapitalvorhaltung, soll mit der Einführung einer der Leverage Ratio (LR - Höchstverschuldungsquote) gelöst werden.
