Monument de la philosophie moderne, "Baruch Spinoza" de Jules Simon est une introduction lumineuse à la pensée du grand philosophe hollandais du XVIIe siècle. Dans cet essai pénétrant, Simon explore les principaux concepts et enjeux de la métaphysique spinoziste, tout en retraçant le parcours intellectuel singulier de celui que Hegel considérait comme le père de la modernité philosophique. Une éthique de la joie et de la connaissance, qui invite à se libérer des passions tristes et des illusions pour atteindre la béatitude. Spinoza apparaît ainsi comme un penseur inclassable et subversif, dont la rigueur géométrique n'a d'égale que l'audace spéculative. Excommunié par la communauté juive d'Amsterdam, soupçonné d'athéisme par ses contemporains, il incarne la figure du philosophe libre et solitaire, tout entier voué à la quête de la vérité.
