BATTERSEA PARK, which opened in 1858 occupies 200 acres on the south bank of the River Thames, and it is Grade II listed. The park extends as far as Chelsea Bridge on one side and East and West Battersea on the others, and it is a glorious green space in a busy part of south London.
BATTERSEA PARK is special in many ways and is considered one of - if not THE - loveliest park in London, with its variety of recreational areas, animals. A children's zoo, specimen trees, shrubs, hidden secrets, and fun activities.
In earlier times, the land was fertile marshland that was used for market gardens, before being reclaimed from the Thames. Asparagus, carrots, melons and lavender (right up to Lavender Hill), were renowned crops. Earlier still, it was famous for duelling.
BATTERSEA PARK, which was laid out by Sir James Pennethorne over eighteen years, was opened in 1858, and was successful from the start. The nearby Chelsea Bridge, which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858, contributed much to its success, and you will recognise many nearby roads named in her honour - Victoria Road, Prince of Wales Road (now Drive), Victoria Circus (now Queen's Circus), and the nearby Albert Bridge.
The Festival of Britain in 1951 was the motivation for attractions to bebuilt, a Tree Walk, fountains, a new water garden, and the fascinating Guinness Clock, which was designed by George Him and Jan Le Witt.
BATTERSEA FUN FAIR was also part of the celebration, with its famous Big dipper, and swings, roundabouts, roller coasters, and all the fun of the fair! Historically, Battersea Fun Fair brought people from all over London to enjoy its thrills and spills. I well remember this great Fun Fair, which sadly closed in 1974 after an horrendous accident which took the lives of five children.
