About the Book

Where The Battles Weren't is a book about ten towns in the western United States who share a name with an important Civil War battle. From Gettysburg, South Dakota to Winchester, Oregon and Petersburg, Alaska to Vicksburg, Arizona, Where The Battles Weren't takes readers on an exciting ride across the American West. Where The Battles Weren't covers these areas during a 17 day road trip in January and February of 2013. These western towns are important because although they share a name with a battle site, they symbolize our country's resolve to move ahead following the Civil War. Covering everything from a capital city high in the Rocky Mountains to a San Francisco Bay Area industrial city, Where the Battles Weren't gives readers a broad look at life out West. This book also describes the challenges, rewards, disappointments, and triumphs of travelling to these locations during the winter. Overall, Where The Battles Weren't is a spirited study of American history and an invigorating narrative on our great modern nation.
About the Author: Adam Smith is a writer from Stanley, Kentucky. Smith graduated from Apollo High School in 1996 and the University of Louisville in 2000, where he majored in Political Science. After college, Smith lived in Palm Springs, California, and worked on oilfield supply boats in the Gulf of Mexico before moving back home to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District. He was successful in the 2004 primary election, defeating two opponents for the Democratic nomination. Running as a classic liberal in a mostly rural district, he challenged conventional views on many major topics and made a courageous stand against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Although defeated in the general election, Smith earned a tremendous amount of respect for running such a righteous campaign. Since running for Congress, Smith has spent most of his time working as a mud logger on drilling rigs in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He hauled coal in southern Illinois from 2011 until 2013 and is still employed in the mining industry, now as an inspector. Smith enjoys watching baseball, reading independent newspapers, and spending time with close friends.
