Weil diese Vielzahl an Produkten sich teilweise bis auf die Marke kaum voneinander unterscheiden lässt, ist die Werbung für die Unternehmen sehr wichtig, um die positiven Eigenschaften ihres Produktes hervorzuheben und ein gutes Image zu schaffen. Die Werbung beschränkt sich dabei nicht (mehr) nur auf die Werbung in Zeitschriften, Zeitungen oder im Fernsehen. Werbung begleitet die Menschen im Alltag auf Plakatwänden, Bannern, Hauswänden, Smartphones, Verkehrsmitteln und in Schaufenstern. Dabei müssen nicht nur die Werbetreibenden immer kreativer werden, was das Konzept, die Planung und die Durchführung angeht, um sich von anderen Werbemaßnahmen abzuheben; auch die Rezipienten müssen sich einiges einfallen lassen, um der ganzen Werbung, der sie, zum Großteil unfreiwillig, ausgesetzt werden noch ausweichen zu können. Deshalb wird unter Anderem in der Rezipienten- Forschung die Wirkung des massenhaften Werbe- Inputs auf die Rezipienten nachgegangen. Denn die Seite der Rezipienten ist nicht außer Acht zu lassen. Zumal die Rezipienten mit steigendem Werbeanteil auch zunehmend genervter von der Werbung sind, was dazu führt, dass sie der Werbung keine Aufmerksamkeit mehr schenken oder diese gar vermeiden. Das verdeutlicht das Problem, mit dem die Werbetreibenden konfrontiert sind: die knapp bemessene Aufmerksamkeit der Rezipienten. Dies ist der Ausgangspunkt für die folgende Arbeit.
