Drei Stunden von Glatz südöstlich, abseits vom Verkehr liegt in einer Quermulde der Vorberge des Eisengebirges das kleine Gebirgsdorf Steindorf. Am Fuße des kleinen und großen Hedwigsteines lagert das eigentliche Dorf, eine geringe Anzahl niedriger Hütten und Gehöfte, die unter Obstbäumen versteckt liegen. An den Rändern der umliegenden Berge, in den Löchern hängen und hocken seine Kolonien. Unse Dorf hat fimf Anteele! rühmt sich jeder Steindorfer; aber niemand wird darum reicher. Mühsam rang man dem Steingeröll die mageren Feldbreiten ab, dann schichtete man es zu Wällen auf, die sich zwischen den Äckern hinziehen. Sie sind grau, verwittert, von Moosen und Flechten überzogen, mit Hirschholder und Heckenrosen bewachsen, wie Mauern einer verfallenen Stadt, wie vergessenes Material eines großen Bauwerkes, dessen Plan verlorengegangen ist. Die letzten Oktobertage bringen morgens und abends tiefe Nebel über Steindorf. Diese steigen von den Tälern des Kessels der Grafschaft Glatz herauf, an dessen südöstlichem Rande das kleine Dorf liegt. Der erschöpfte Wind treibt sie schläfrig herauf, gleich unförmigen grauen Riesentieren. Dann ziehen sie träge heran, stoßen sich an den steilen Schwarzwaldhängen des Rollenberges und des Hedwigsteines, versuchen über ihn hinwegzuklimmen, fallen aber träge zurück und rollen ihre plumpen Leiber hinab in das Tal, das bald angefüllt ist mit ihren wolligen, unruhigen Rücken. Der Wind, ihr Hirt, geht noch eine Weile auf den Kämmen der Berge hin und her, lobt die Ruhe seiner grauen Riesenherde mit hohem, zufriedenem Singen oder brüllt sein Mißfallen in rauhen Aufschreien ins Tal und wühlt sich endlich spät in der Nacht mit knurrenden Lauten zu kurzer Ruhe in den Waldhöhen ein. In solchen Nebelnächten des Spätherbstes hört dann das Leben auf der Straße von Steindorf noch eher auf als sonst. Auch das Glockentürmchen auf dem Freirichtergute, das sonst immer als standhafter Wächter über die Dächer späht, verkriecht sich gar zeitig irgendwohin. G
