Einleitung Der mittelalterliche Abt und Mystiker Bernhard von Clairvaux (1090 - 1153) wird heute von der Forschung als einer der bedeutendsten Mönche des Zisterzienserordens wahrgenommen, für dessen Ausbreitung in ganz Europa er sich verantwortlich zeichnete. Er wirkte unter anderem als theologischer Schriftsteller und predigte gegen Irrlehrer und Abtrünnige. Wegen seiner entscheidenden Impulse und aufgrund seiner Bedeutung als Kirchenlehrer wird Bernhard von den Zisterziensern neben den drei Gründervätern des Ordens2 als größter Ordensheiliger verehrt. Seine Lehren werden noch heute in vielen Werken gewürdigt. Umstritten ist jedoch sein Wirken als Kreuzzugsprediger und Befürworter der Kreuzzüge sowie seine Verbindungen zum Orden der Templer. Bernhard wird oft als "Geburtshelfer"3 des Templerordens bezeichnet, da er an dessen Entstehung sowie Anerkennung seitens der Kirche beteiligt gewesen sein soll. Nach den ersten, unscheinbaren Anfängen der Templer, sollte diese neue Ritterschaft einige Jahre später die militärische Leitung des zweiten Kreuzzugs übernehmen und sich schließlich zu einem reichen, sowie auch mächtigen Orden entwickeln. Ermöglicht wurde dieser Aufstieg der Templer nicht zuletzt durch die entschiedene Fürsprache Bernhards. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, zu versuchen die Reaktion Bernhards von Clairvaux auf das Auftauchen dieses neuen und zugleich ungewöhnlichen Ordens zu erkunden und die Verbindungen zwischen dem Abt und den - bei Zeitgenossen umstrittenen - Templern darzustellen und zu analysieren.
