Dazu wird der auf den privaten Kosten basierende Marktpreis mit dem so genannten Best Practice Price verglichen. Dieser beinhaltet neben den privaten Kosten auch die sozialen Kosten, die der Gesellschaft angelastet werden - beispielsweise in Form der Folgen des Klimawandels, durch unfaire Löhne oder Umweltverschmutzung. BPP berücksichtigt diese Kosten und drückt sie wie den Marktpreis als Geldwert aus. Nehmen wir an, ein T-Shirt kostet zwei Euro. Der Preis inklusive der sozialen Kosten entspricht jedoch sechs Euro. Dieser Preis, der "gezahlt werden müsste" ist der Preis der Best Practice, der Best Practice Price. Setzen wir Marktpreis und BPP ins Verhältnis, erhalten wir den Best Practice Ratio (BPR). Dieser gibt an, wieviel Prozent des BPP durch den Marktpreis gedeckt sind. In unserem Beispiel sind dies 33 Prozent. Ein Wert von 100 Prozent würde einem T-Shirt entsprechen, das gemäß der Best Practice hergestellt wäre. Anstatt auf Labels mit inkommensurablen Aussagen zu achten, reicht ein Blick auf den BPR auf dem Preisschild. Dadurch wird nachhaltiger Konsum einfach. Für Unternehmen wiederum ist Nachhaltigkeit dadurch eine berechenbare Größe, die wie der Marktpreis für jede Station in der Wertschöpfungskette berechnet und an den nächsten Produzenten weitergereicht wird. Für BPP und die dahinterstehende Best Practice Price Foundation wird in dieser Arbeit das visuelle Erscheinungsbild samt Website sowie eine mobile App konzipiert. Die Best Practice App ist der "Experte in der Hosentasche". Beim Einkauf können Produkte über den Barcode eingescannt werden, um den BPP und BPR zu erfahren.
