Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, Note: 2,3, Universität Paderborn, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In Zeiten einer anhaltend schlechten wirtschaftlichen Lage und in Anbetracht hoher Arbeitslosenzahlen scheint es paradox, dass sich ausgerechnet das Privatkundengeschäft als eine Stütze der Finanzbranche erweist und zu relativ stabilen Erträgen führen kann. Insbesondere das Geschäft mit den vermögenden Privatkunden, welches im Allgemeinen unter dem Begriff Private Banking zusammengefasst wird, erwirtschaftete laut einer Studie von McKinsey von 1997 bis 2001 eine jährliche Rendite von 40,8 % und übertraf damit selbst die Renditen in den Bereichen Asset Management (29,9 %) oder Investment Banking (29,5 %). Da voraussichtlich nicht nur die Anzahl der vermögenden Privatpersonen sondern auch ihr Vermögen in der Zukunft weiter anwachsen soll, wird der Bereich Private Banking als einer der Wachstumsmärkte in den nächsten Jahren betrachtet. Dies ist besonders wichtig, da die Lage der Finanzbranche in den letzten Jahren eher bedenklich war, was durch die schlechte Wirtschaftslage noch verstärkt wurde. Selbst der Spiegel schrieb über die Bankenbranche: "Die einst so mächtigen Geldkonzerne der alten Deutschland AG, die in Zeiten des Wirtschaftswunders die Geschicke der Großindustrie mitsteuerten, stehen vor der größten Bewährungsprobe ihrer jüngeren Geschichte." Auch wenn sich die größeren Kreditinstitute bereits wieder auf dem Weg der Besserung befinden, sind die Gründe für die allgemein schlechte Situation vielfältig und reichen von einem engmaschigen, unrentablen Filialnetz, über zu geringe Margen, bis hin zu einem überholten Bankenmodell welches aus Sparkassen, Genossenschafts- und Privatbanken besteht. In den neunziger Jahren versuchten insbesondere die deutschen Großbanken über den verstärkten Einstieg in das Investment Banking an die internationale Konkurrenz anzuschließen und konnten durchaus gute Erfolge erzielen.
