About the Book

This exhibition catalog shows large groups of work by three internationally recognised artists: Susan Hefuna, Bharti Kher, and Fred Tomaselli. Their works are characterized by a recourse to cultural, traditional, and religious references--including Egypt, India, and America. By using techniques like carving, they also raise questions about art and craft.

About the Author: The work of German-Egyptian artist Susan Hefuna has been widely exhibited at such venues as Louvre, Paris; Townhouse Gallery, Cairo; House of World Cultures, Berlin; The Third Line Gallery, Dubai; Sharjah Biennial; Albion Gallery London and New York; New Museum, New York; Sevilla Biennial, Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Venice Biennial and many more.

Barthi Kher was born 1969 in London, UK. Lives and works in New Delhi, India. She is known for her menagerie of resin-cast animals, which are covered with the bindi, and she also uses the bindi to make large, wall-based panels. (The bindi in India is traditionally a mark of pigment applied to the forehead.) Her international reputation includes important recent exhibitions such as 'Indian Summer: Contemporary Art in India', Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris, in 2005. She has had a series of solo exhibitions in New York, New Delhi, Amsterdam and in Bangalore, India, in early 2006.

Fred Tomaselli (born in Santa Monica, California, in 1956) is an American artist. He is best known for his highly detailed paintings on wood panels, combining an array of unorthodox materials suspended in a thick layer of clear, epoxy resin. He has been included in numerous group exhibitions including 'Open Ends', MoMA, New York (2000), the Berlin Biennale (2001), the Liverpool Biennial (2002), the Whitney Biennial (2004), the 5th Site Santa Fe Biennial (2004) and 'Ecstasy', LA MoCA (2006). Solo exhibitions include Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, (1999), Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, Florida (2001), Site Santa Fe, New Mexico (2001), Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, Buffalo, New York (2003), Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2004), IMMA, Dublin (2005) and The Rose Art Museum, Massachusetts (2005).

Helen Hirsch is the director of the Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland.
